the twenty-eighth <DIV1> contains the appended
"Story of Alexander" (pp.279-83).

Many of the passus exist in both of the two extant
manuscripts (Ashmole and Dublin), which this edition
prints separately on facing pages. If any portion
of a passus exists in both of these versions, divide
the corresponding <DIV1> into two <DIV2>s, one
for each version. Watch for "[Ashmole" or "Dublin]"
at the head of each page to check which version is
printed on that page.

Most notes are footnotes, keyed to the text by footnote
reference numbers. Record these in the usual way as
<NOTE PLACE="foot">.
There are some scribal notes in the margin in small
bold type. Record these in the usual way as
<NOTE PLACE="marg">.

There are also some notes in brackets at the ends of sections,
or marking places where text is missing. The PLACE attribute
may be omitted in such cases if there is no obvious value
to use.
Bold type in the main text
Some lines and portions of lines of verse are in bold type.
Record this with the <B> tag. If individual letters within
the bold-type word are italicized, treat the whole word
as bold. Example (p.159):

Characters
Record the left-pointing index finger as &lindex;
the right-pointing index fingers as &rindex;
