Notes

  1. Footnotes are linked to the text by superscript footnote number. Replace the reference number in the text by the <NOTE> element, as usual (using PLACE="foot").

  2. Some brief scribal notes appear in smaller type in the margins. Record these as <NOTE PLACE="marg"> and place the note element at the end of the nearest line to the beginning of the note, also as usual.

Catch words

All or most pages print a "catch word" at the bottom (which should be the same as the first word of the next page). Do not record catch words.

Character problems

"y" often appears with a dot over it:
Ignore the dot.

In one or two notes, you'll find some strange "Anglo-Saxon" type. Record this simply as illegible, using the usual $$ markers. Example (p. 11):
