STRUCTURE
Note: a helpful guide to the structure of this
book is contained in the table of contents
on pp. v-vi.
<FRONT> contains only the title page.
<BODY> contains the main text and the two appendices.
<DIV1>s
with TYPE="item" are used to record the first two (unnumbered)
selections (Bestiary, Old Kentish Sermons), as well as the 31 items
numbered with roman numerals (I-XXXI), Appendix II, and
Appendix III.
<DIV2>s
... with TYPE="version" are used to record variant versions of
the same item, e.g. Text I and Text II of items XV, XX,
XXI, XXII, XIII, XXIV, XXV.
Item XV: "Text I" on even-numbered pages 102-130;
"Text II" on odd-numbered pages 103-131 and
all pp. 132-138.
Items XX-XXV:
Caligula MS version on even-numbered pages
Jesus College version on odd-numbered pages
... with TYPE="chapter" are used to record the larger divisions
of the Bestiary (first item in the book): the divisions
by kind of animal:
Lion, pp. 1-2
Eagle, pp. 3-4
Serpent, pp. 5-8
Ant, pp. 8-10
Hart, pp. 10-12
Fox, pp. 12-15

... with TYPE="sermon" are used to record the various "Old Kentish
Sermons" (the second item in the book):

Sermon for the 2nd Sunday after the Octave of Epiphany, pp.29-30
Sermon for the 3rd Sunday after the Ocatve of Epiphany, pp.31-32
Sermon for the 4th Sunday after the Octave of Epiphany, pp.32-33
Sermon for Sexagesima Sunday, pp. 33-36
... with TYPE="section" are used to record the various sections supplied
with headings, e.g. in item I (heading for "prologus" p. 37, "passyun"
p. 38 "Her is hwon..." p. 53)
<DIV3>s
should be needed rarely, e.g. for the heading-supplied sections
(TYPE="section") of the Bestiary (first item in the book).
<LG>s
are used whenever a true stanzaic layout appears, e.g.
in III, VI, X, XV, XVI, XVII, etc. Record stanza numbers
as the value of the "N" attribute of the <LG> tag, as usual.
MILESTONES
Folio references appear in square brackets in the margins,
like this:
[leaf 225] = <MILESTONE UNIT="folio" N="225">
[leaf 225, back] = <MILESTONE UNIT="folio" N="225b">

[leaf 226, back] = <MILESTONE UNIT="folio" N="226b">
[fol. 17 b.] = <MILESTONE UNIT="folio" N="17b">
Sometimes they are keyed to the text by an asterisk,
like this:
[*leaf 264 b.] = <MILESTONE UNIT="folio" N="264b">
[*leaf 265] = <MILESTONE UNIT="folio" N="265">
[* leaf 10 a.] = <MILESTONE UNIT="folio" N="10a">

NOTES
Most of the notes are standard footnotes (or occasionally
marginal notes), tied to the text by superscripted
reference numbers. Treat these as usual
with <NOTE PLACE="foot"> (or <NOTE PLACE="marg">) inserted
in the text in place of the reference number.
