Collection abbreviations end without period--LdMisc, Eg, etc. See Bod below for MED abbreviations used. Shelf-marks for most collections will have period but no space between components: a.2, F.34, 26.C.9, etc., but Hnt and Mrg MSS have space and no period: Hnt HM 131, Mrg M 64. Cambridge, Trinity College and St. John's College collections have two sets of numbers; give both in CITE in MSLIST only, in the following order, Trin-C B.12.26 (24), StJ-C C.25 (75); Gonville and Caius has two numbers separated thus: 174/95 (the second is the James catalogue number). POINT OUT FURTHER EXCEPTIONS IF YOU FIND THEM.

MSLIST: Include in the CITE any significant information, which will chiefly be of the type (olim Butler-Bowdon), or (whereabouts unknown), and, occasionally, (now privately owned). (The last of these is used only for MSS known to be in the hands of private collectors who choose not to be identified. Known private collectors like Toshi Takamiya are identified: Mellon, Tak, etc.) Give up to two olim refs, in the sequence most recent owner, earlier owner--not always easy to establish.

Common Name MSS need only the abbreviation Vrn, Heng, as an attribute value. The rest of the information will be supplied from MSLib.

MSGROUP: Supply here abbreviations in the same form as you will use for ABBR below: Mrg M 34, SeldArch B.123. No further information goes here, except for Common Name MSS, which have both familiar abbreviation and official abbreviation/shelf mark, as above in table.

Follow Phillipps model--replace where possible, adding (olim Ashburnham + number if known) in <CITE>

• Arms=London, College of Arms. The following replaces notes in Common Name MSS information sheet, which is now obsolete. We need to distinguish (i) Arms from (ii) Arms, Arundel and (iii) Arms,Vincent, and whatever else may materialise, within the CITE and MS group. Use Arms, ArmsAr, and ArmsV as appropriate for MSLIST attribute and elsewhere. ArmsAr MSS run from 1-54, Arms run 55-64, and ArmsV include (?only) 418, 419, 421.

• Arun: refers to Arundel MSS in the BL. Used as an attribute in MSLIST it will expand to "London, British Library, Arundel" Not to be confused with Arundel MSS in London, College of Arms, see above.

• Bagot: replaces Deritend, q.v.

• Banister: replaced by: NYPubLib = New York, Public Library MS 67 (olim Banister) abbr. NYPubLib Wycliffite Bible MS, id from de Ricci index to owners, and Lindberg SN 42 (1970). Identified as no. 162 in F&Madden, vol. 1, lxiii. IPMEP says 64-66 for shelf-mark, but De Ricci Suppl Index and Lindberg agree on 67.

• Bedf: replace by Add 36983 (olim Bedford) in <CITE> (London, British Library, Additional 36983) (Cursor Mundi)

• Beeleigh: MSLib supplies Beeleigh Abbey, Foyle MS. We have no more specific shelf marks for Foyle MSS, so use any available olim information (olim Huth, olim Harmsworth) to distinguish them. Some Beeleigh Abbey, Foyle MSS are indexed in IPMEP. How many Foyle MSS are there? See Huth, below.

• Bil: retain as unique entry (unidentified and probably lost, see Hamer, p. 60 ff.)

• Bodleian complications -- a useful source of information is the Summary Catalogue of Western Manuscripts in the Bodleian Library, at Oxford, vol. 1, which is on my bookshelf. It gives current and obsolete shelf-marks, and SC numbers.

• Butler-Bowdon: replaced by London, British Library, Additional 61823 (olim Butler-Bowdon) (Book of Margery Kempe)

• Cardwell: MS identified and now expands as "olim Cardwell, Harmsworth sale, Sotheby's 15 October 1945, lot 2036, to Maggs (whereabouts unknown)" (WBible MS, identified in IPMEP and in Lindberg SN 42 (1970))

• Calth: is now Add 48031 (olim Calthorpe, Yelverton 35)

• Chal: may be redundant; if so, delete. Used in incipit, but now York Minster addit. MS.Yk-M Add.2

• Chet=Manchester, Chetham's Library, BUT

  Chet 27092 (Chauliac) is now Tak 59, q.v.

• Chr-C Dub: Watch out for with this designation. This is identified in MS Lib as a unique MS. If there are other MSS with this designation, we need to adjust the MS Lib.

• Cole: Expands as Cole MS (whereabouts unknown) --used in one incipit "Looke out here", no info in IMEV or Hamer, or elsewhere so far.

• Crawford: (in Ryl) --now obsolete, see Ryl.

• Cx: as MS abbreviation replaced by Caxton in MS Lib, to conform with Pynson, etc.

• Davies: replace by Lyell 34 (olim Davies)

• Delam: replace by Tak 32 (olim Penrose 10, olim Delamere). This is now Tokyo, Toshiyushi Takamiya MS 32.

• Deritend: deleted and replaced by Bagot (expands to Stafford, Staffs Record Office, Bagot D 1721/3/186 (olim Deritend House), from Hamer p.17: = IMEV 3529/1--poem). Check in MED where this MS is used.

• DubNLI: Dublin, National Library of Ireland. MED Kil: used in incipit IMEV 1010, q.v. , now identified by Hamer and Lalme as Dublin, DubNLI D.1435. If other Kil MSS turn up, they may belong here.

• Dugd: replaced by BodDugd, which expands as Oxford, Bodleian Library, Dugdale 46, confirmed.

• DukeH: added for Palladius MS olim Earl Fitzwilliam. e-mail from B B-B confirms shelfmark of DukeH MSS (if others show up) includes an alphabetical ref. --Duke Humfrey d.2 in the the case of Palladius. Hamer omits the d in his ref. for this MS.

• Dun: expanded to conform to Hamer, need to modify if more Dunrobin MSS turn up.

• Dur-C: refers to MSS in the Cathedral Dean and Chapter Library and expands to<MSFULL MS="Dur-C">Durham, Cathedral Library</MSFULL>

• DurDandC: use for Dean and Chapter Muniments, documentary materials, transferred to Special Collections in Durham University Library. If you have full shelf-mark details, use DurD&amp;C as abbreviation for repository. It expands to <MSFULL MS="DurDandC">Durham, University Library, Dean and Chapter Muniments</MSFULL>

• Dur-Ex: <MSFULL MS="Dur-Ex">Durham, Exchequer?</MSFULL>

• Dur-U: use for other MSS in the Special Collections of Durham University, e.g., Cosin; it expands to<MSFULL MS="Dur-U">Durham, University Library</MSFULL>

• Eaton: added: <MSFULL MS="Eaton">Privately owned (olimEaton Hall, MSS of the Duke of Westminster)</MSFULL>; Eaton apparently used only for a PPl. MS formerly belonging to the Duke of Westminster, now privately owned. If there are more, this will need to be changed.

• Ednb-U=Edinburgh, University Library. This is the abbr. listed in the P&B, but apparently Edinb-U also appears in MED. It should be replaced by Ednb-U.

• Emral: used once in S.1. Now Add 46846 (olim Emral) - information from Ceridwen at NLW.

• Erfurt: Royal Library replaced by Stadtbibliothek following Hamer.

• Ex: confirmation from Exeter that Lydgate Banner of St. Ed. is now Exeter City Archives, Misc. Rolls 59. Any further Ex MSS will need to be checked with them.

• Fil or Fillingham: see Common Name MSS. Dump Fillingham in favor of Fil

• Gar: Princeton, University Library, Dept. of Rare Books and Special Collections, Garrett

  The Manual numbers (in thousands) are from deposit numbers, now irrelevant. Correct current numbers run 1-172.

  Garrett 138 was once Yates-Thompson MS (see LALME 1.154.)

• Gough: replaced by GoughETop (all occurrences so far are in Mirk). If other Gough MSS turn up, restore Gough to MSLib.

• Gldh: <MSFULL MS="Gldh">London, Corporation of London Records Office, Guildhall</MSFULL> this replaces MED expansion of Guildhall Library, now a separate institution. The CorpLondRO is the home of Letter Books, and Journals. If other materials turn up, we need to check their home. MS abbrev. for Letter Book (s) is LetBk or LetBks A&amp;B (etc.), and abbrev. for Journal(s) is Jrnl or Jrnls.

• Gurn: replace by current information when possible, adding (olim Gurney) Check MED Gurney Siege of Thebes is now CmbAdd 6864 (olim Gurney 150) See Hamer 20 for 3 Gurney MSS.Index/Supp 981 (short prayer): Egerton 3245 [olim Gurney] used in various incipits. See also Bodmer above for a former Gurney MS Severs 9.XXIII.15, #9: ids a former Gurney MS containing Emendatio Vitae, now Takamiya (with no number given) olim Bradfer-Lawrence 10, olim Gurney. • HarvLawLib: added as MS attribute; produces Cambridge, Mass., Harvard University, Law Library MS. Add MS number in <CITE>, and use HarvLawLib 43 (or whatever) for MSGroup and Abbrev.

• HatDon: added, expands to Oxford, Bodleian Library, Hatton donat.

• Helm=Helmingham Hall, MSS of Lord Tollemache. May need changing. Some or all are scattered. See also Tol, abbreviation used for Trev. Barth. only. Present homes of several Helm MSS follow, from which entries can be constructed, using (olim Helm + shelf-mark). More information needed on the Chaucer MS, if we use it. Some others may be traced in the IMEV suppl.

  One Huth MS containing the Mirror of Man's Salvation is now Beeleigh (olim Huth, <I>olim </I> Harmsworth) (See IMEV 1011.9, 15 8-line stanzas and IMEV Suppl.) We have no more specific shelf marks for Foyle MSS, so use any (olim Huth, olim Harmsworth) information available to distinguish.

  Hnt HM 144 (olim Huth) contains Melibee and Monk's Tale

• Ing: olim Sir Henry Ingilby -- delete. Now Morgan M 818 (Susannah).

• Inscr: added to cover items occurring not in MSS but as inscriptions on caskets, statuary or other objects (conceivably could refer to copies or excerpts of items which are preserved elsewhere in MSS).

• IrBl: replace by Tay 9 (olim Bodmer, olim Ireland-Blackburne), provided this is THE Ireland-Blackburne MS, containing romances, including Awntyrs Arthur, which is now Princeton, University Library, Dept. of Rare Books and Special Collections, Taylor 9 (olim Bodmer, olim Ireland-Blackburne). LALME 1.154 lists U. of Penn. Eng I, olim Ireland of Blackburne MS, containing religious texts (PConsc., 7 Pen. Psalms, etc.). See Lewis/McI Index P.Consc. p.124. I don't know yet if MED cites this or not, and if it does, what abbrev. is used.

• Jes-O 29: LALME entry covers all of part 2 of MS (= 29 items).
• Kil: used in incipit IMEV 1010, q.v. , now id by Hamer and Lalme as Dublin, DubNLI D.1435
• LancsRO: added, expands to Preston, Lancashire County Record Office
• Lawson: this is probably Harv Widener 1 (olim Lawson) in all cases.
• Ld: Deleted from MSLib. Almost all (but there may be exceptions--check in MED or Manual) will be replaced by:

• Leyden: use Voss
• McC=Cambridge, Fitzwilliam Museum, McClean. McCl also occurs as abbr. in MED, but should be McC, change (correction in P&B Supp. Errata)
• Mdst: expands to Maidstone, Kent, Maidstone Museum and Art Gallery, following investigation.
• MdstCKS: Maidstone, Kent, Center for Kentish Studies (compare Archon for both)
• Mel: added, expands to Melbourne (Australia), State Library of Victoria (used in Pilgr.LM)

• Mostyn: replaced by Yale 661. If any other Mostyn appears, I'll have to identify it. Dec 3 98: Retain Mostyn--Mostyn 186 has not been identified by Hamer for 1837/1. Check Daniel Huws for possibilities for Mostyn MSS in Books and Collectors, ed. James Carley and Colin Tite, pp. 451-72, # Z 723.B66. 186 is listed there, but its whereabouts is not given.
• Mrg: Pierpont Morgan MSS need to include a collection designation within the CITE, MSGROUP, and ABBR tags. This will probably be "M" (e.g., Mrg M 775), but could also be "Glazier," or other names. Need to check this, as MED cards have only "Mrg" plus bare number.

(ii) The foundation Rosenbach established, Philadelphia, Rosenbach Museum and Library, which has its own collection, and which holds some MSS we may use, e.g., Rsnb 439/16 (olim Phillipps 4254), Lydgate, Fall of Princes

• Scheide: <MSFULL MS="Scheide">Princeton, The Scheide Library</MSFULL>

  I have added this to the MS Lib., corresp. to entries for Garrett and Taylor collections in Princeton, University Library. Of these three collections, MED apparently only uses Gar as an abbreviation. As of now (Nov. 24, 1997), we should handle all of these the same way. A Scheide attribute value will generate the above.

  Gar or Taylor will do the same, mutatis mutandis. On the styling, see message from Don Skemer, in the MEC Apparatus folder on my machine (FMS).
