• All files follow basic patterns:
  • MED files proper always begin with the bundle number (lowercase): k1, r3, m4, etc.
  • Nonce scripts directed at particular volumes and files extracted from particular volumes always begin with the volume letter and a hyphen (lowercase). E.g., a file of stencils extracted from M will be called m-st.txt; a perl script addressing a form problem in R will be called r-form.pl; etc.
  • [not implemented: scripts belonging to a particular stage of processing will begin with the appropriate letter (uppercase). E.g., a script that operates at stage G might be called "G-etym.pl".]
  • General extraction scripts always begin with "ex-"
• Temporary Files such as those generated as the output of scripts, can be conveniently named in any way that is memorable, usually by the name of the script that generated them.
• More permanent MED files will:
  • terminate according to format:

          *.sgm    SGML files
          *.html   html
          *.dtd,   document type descriptions
          *.ent    entities files
          *.apx    APEX keyboarding format
          *.pl     perl scripts
          *.ae     binary Author/Editor files
          *.txt    unencoded text files
     

  • contain (where appropriate) the relevant dtd or equivalent as the middle term:

          *.raw.apx.....not converted to SGML
          *.med.sgm.....files as received from MED SGML production
          *.simp.sgm....files as converted to MEDsimp dtd
          *.tei.sgm.....files as converted to TEI dtd
    

    Interim stages in production are marked by file-storage location, not file name.
