Historical Information about Razee Smoothing Plane
Patent illustration from patent obtained by Daniel Heald,
son of the maker, in 1878, for an elegantly simple plane iron cap.
According to Instruments of Change, p. 33, "this
patented device apparently evolved from Daniel Milton Heald's earlier
pivoted wooden wedge and tightening screw. In the fully developed
invention, the cast-iron plane iron cap is pivoted on a steel
pin. A steel screw penetrates a slide in the cap and holds the double
plane iron. A second screw permits the vertical adjustment of the slide,
moving the plane iron in or out of the mouth of the plane."
